PA Republican Primary Candidates in 78th District Prepare for Elections

FULTON CO, Pa. With Pennsylvania primary elections coming up next month, candidates are continuing their push to gain support before polls open.

The republican primary candidates for state representative of the 78th district are Joshua Lang and incumbent Jesse Topper. This year, the district still includes all of Fulton County, but has added parts of Franklin County and less of Bedford County.

Lang says his time in the army has given him the leadership skills necessary to represent the district. He served from 2005-2011, and has since been involved with several veterans programs.

"I’ve served as the Pennsylvania outreach coordinator for Student Veterans of America, working with state legislatures,” said Lang. “From there I became the National Vice President of Student Veterans of America."

Topper took office earlier this year after representative Dick Hess passed away. He highlights his life-long work in the community and business experience.

"I worked for Bedford United Methodist Church, started as their music coordinator, then was the minister of fine arts and finished as the executive minister,” said Topper. “I've been Vice President of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce."

If elected, Lang says he wants to focus on reducing property taxes and the state's debt.

"School property taxes, I believe it is getting outrageous and I want to look at how can we more efficiently fund K-12 education,” said Lang.

Meanwhile Topper says he wants to improve the public pension system and make Pennsylvania more business-friendly.

"Pension reform … is a huge issue, it's really burdening our economy and if we don't do something the burden will fall on the taxpayers,” said Topper.

Both candidates say regardless of the results, they will remain committed to the community they wish to serve.

Pennsylvania primary elections are on May 20.
