HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - From everything - laundry detergent to dog treats.
Imagine winning a free shopping spree at a local grocery store.
It happened for one man in Horseheads.
The lucky winner came with his running shoes on to participate in the annual Check Out Hunger shopping spree at Jubilee Foods in Horseheads Tuesday morning.
Winner Ray Kellar took off as fast as he could down the aisle to grab as many goodies as he could in two minutes during a live broadcast on 18 News Today.
Ray tells 18 News his strategy to get the biggest bang for the buck was to go straight to the meats as he has upcoming barbeques in the spring.
He grabbed tons of laundry detergent for his family who are college students and dog treats for his pets.
The shopping spree benefits the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
"Check Out Hunger really does step in and provides the ability to have hope," said Katherine Strawser, community event planner for the food bank.
Ray hauled in a total of $1,402.80. Jubilee Foods will donate the dollar amount to the food bank.
"With his take and the match and what we collected from the community which is a wonderful supporter of this program, we've collected over $17,000 this year," Tom Gaige, owner of Jubilee Foods said.
"I can't thank the food bank and Jubilee enough, that was an absolute blast, my adrenaline is still going so maybe next year it will be somebody else's lucky turn but it was well worth doing," said Kellar.
