A historic moment for the City of Hornell: A new mayor

HORNELL, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Saturday afternoon, the residents of the City of Hornell witnessed a historic moment for their city-- a new mayor.

"Big shoes to fill, it's a big job, but I'm ready for it," John Buckley, the new mayor of Hornell, said.

It was a packed house inside the old courtroom in the county offices. Residents gathered to see the swearing-in ceremony.

"The community has given so much to me during my early years, during my teen years, during my twenties that I just wanted to give back," Buckley said. "Now that I'm a little bit older, in a better point in my life, I'm able to do that."

Mayor Buckley will take over after long-time serving mayor, Shawn Hogan, announced his retirement after 32 years in office. During that time, Buckley served under Hogan as city alderman and deputy mayor.

"Serving as deputy mayor under Shawn Hogan has prepared me, so I'm ready to hit the ground running," He said. "I've already been working in city hall for the last month-and-a-half to two months, we've had a great, smooth transition and I'm looking forward to it."

His first day on the job is on Tuesday. He's already outlined tasks that he will get to work on.

"We've got a lot of appointments to make on the various boards in this city, I'm currently the deputy mayor so I have to replace that position as well," Buckley explained. "There's a lot of projects that are going on as we speak, there's a lot of things going on, we'll be very busy in the departments, we'll be very busy around the city, in the meetings, so we've got a full plate."
