Astorino: Cuomo "Coddles" Sheldon Silver; Calls for Silver's Resignation, End to Cuomo's Lies

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM-18) – Republican gubernatorial nominee Rob Astorino and Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss say Governor Andrew Cuomo is lying to New Yorkers. They are also calling for the resignation of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Rob Astorino stood with Sheriff Moss Friday night to call for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s resignation. They spoke at the Hazlitt County Office Building.

A recent New York Times article says Silver, who has been speaker for 21 years, claimed another Sheldon Silver worked with a community group to block a low-income housing project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1970s. But the Times article claims Silver’s case of mistaken identity is a lie, and that he was the one who worked with the group.

Now Astorino and Moss are calling for his resignation. “The Governor, again, is coddling Sheldon Silver, who we know has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money to cover up sexual assaults and crimes in the Legislature on women,” said Astorino. He also said that Governor Cuomo had thrown women under the bus.

But Astorino and Moss didn’t just call for Silver’s resignation. Astorino also called on the Governor to stop lying, after he told the press in Cooperstown Thursday night that he would make his decision about running on the Independence Party line “down the road”, when he had already signed the paperwork to do so.

“This is a patter, and it says a lot about who they are,” said Astorino. “It also says about why, as a state, we are failing. Why we are dead last 50th in this country in all the wrong categories.”

We also asked Astorino about the Governor’s pick of former Congresswoman Kathy Hochul for Lieutenant Governor. “I think she is a perfect choice for Andrew Cuomo,” said Astorino. “She, in the private sector, her company outsourced jobs to China. She’s an outsourcing lobbyist, and Governor Cuomo’s outsourcing New Yorkers to all the other states because of his high taxes and bad economy here. So I think they’re perfect for each other.”

WETM 18 News called and e-mailed Governor Cuomo’s campaign for a comment Friday afternoon. We have not gotten a response back.
