ELMIRA, N.Y. (18-NEWS) Everyone in Chemung County with AT&T and Verizon cell phone service can now send emergency text messages to 911.

The Chemung County Communication center added the ability for AT&T customers to text 911 when they are unable to make a phone call. Verizon customers have had the ability since August of 2013. Customers must be in range of the Chemung County Cell Tower, or the signal will not know where to send the text.

It’s still preferable to call 911 so operators can ask questions, but local authorities said the text ability could be a life-saver.
