Back to School Drive: Families Save Big

SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. (18-NEWS) -- The Catholic Charities program in Chemung and Schuyler Counties is helping parents save big on back to school for kids this fall.

Back to school is often code for big budget, something many families can’t afford with multiple children and growing supplies lists.

Thanks to a local donation drive that has been going strong in our area for over 14 years, families can breathe a sigh of relief. One relieved caretaker is Lavon Myers, who attended the Schuyler County drive with husband and grandson, 8-year-old Brandon.

"Oh my god getting stuff for my grandson getting clothes for my husband, getting clothes for me. This is great. We love coming down here looking at things, seeing people that we don't get to see that we know, it's a blessing it's like Christmas."

Myers says she believes every area should have this resource to help with budgets and rising costs.

"It helps everybody out. The community, I mean, money wise, people can't afford to buy much of anything anymore, so this is like, great."

Catholic Charities Director of Development, Lindsay Winters says the effort really is community wide, with businesses participating and residents lending helping hands to make the events a success every year.

"People really are committed to helping kids, helping this community, we have the produce here so people could pick it up, that's extra items that we had, it really is a whole community rallying together for kids."

The Catholic Charities of Chemung County is finished collecting clothing donations as of this week. If you would like to make a donation you are welcome to donate monetarily, through school supplies, or food supplies. Next Wednesday, August 27,Chemung County residents can head to the Samaritan Center for a back to school giveaway event. You can click here for more details.
