ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Greater Southern Tier BOCES students in the New Visions Innovation, Leadership and Business class are are learning how to promote a show.
"It kind of opens us up to a different world that we've never really been a part of," Horseheads High School senior Erich Stoltzfus said.
"We had a local entrepreneur come to us, Matt Hufnagel, who promotes a lot of shows," instructor Paul Richmond said. "He split the kids up into teams: promotion, production, and sales and marketing."
For weeks students have been doing things like setting ticket prices, meeting with potential sponsors, and of course letting people know Erth's DINOSAUR ZOO LIVE is coming to the Clemens Center via flyers and social media.
"These master puppeteers have these huge lifelike dinosaurs that were designed by paleontologist to be as life like as possible and the kids learn about dinosaurs, how they interact with animals and it's just a fun learning experience," Stoltzfus said.
While the show itself is an exciting experience, students said organizing it was just as enjoyable.
"It's just like working on the fly because you don't know what's going to happen, you don't know what he's throwing at you next and you don't know who you're talking to or who you're meeting with the next day," Elmira High School senior Timothy Manning said. "You got to stay on your toes, everything's new every day and it just keeps you going."
"It's all the real world experience that you get from not having to sit in classrooms like back in my home school and take tests and take notes like that," Horseheads High School senior Matt Gill said. "You can get out there and do different things and get a little variety in your repertoire."
"High school students are typically not involved in the business world but sitting in on so many meetings, participating, calling people nonstop, bothering people as much as we can trying to get our show out there has been an interesting experience, just to see how people really do communicate with each other," Stoltzfus said.
Erth's DINOSAUR ZOO LIVE will be at the Clemens Center Tuesday night only. For more information on the show and tickets visit the Clemens Center website.
