BREAKING: Man shot after police chase in Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - An early morning police chase in Elmira has ended with a man shot.

Detective Bureau Captain Anthony Alvernaz, of the Elmira Police Department, told 18 News that the chase began after a report of a home invasion robbery around 5 a.m. this morning, where the suspect is alleged to have fired shots inside a home.

Elmira Police began searching for the suspect, and located him around 9 a.m. The chase started in the City of Elmira, and ultimately ended on Latta Brook Rd., in Horseheads.

Captain Alvernaz says that after the suspect shed two tires on his car, he fired shots at law enforcement officers, who then returned fire. 

The suspect was hit by an Elmira Police Officer.

It is also reported that the suspect was wanted by the New York State Department of Parole.

Captain Alvernaz said that the suspect's name won't be released until his family is notified. 

The investigation is being handled by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.
