Bridge closure hampers business at The Christmas House

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - UPDATE: Both a northbound and a southbound lane will be open on the Madison Ave. bridge as of Thurs. Dec. 14.

ORIGINAL: A co-owner of The Christmas House in Elmira said she's not getting as many customers in her store this year. The reason, she said, is construction on the Madison Ave. bridge.

The gas line that runs along the Lake Street bridge is corroding and needs to be replaced. So NYSEG crews are moving it to the Madison Avenue bridge over the next few weeks.

To do that, they've closed the Madison Ave. bridge to southbound traffic. Julie Delgrosso, co-owner of The Christmas House,  said it's creating a problem for many customers. City officials also said it's causing traffic issues, and that they're working on a solution.

"Ninety percent of our business comes from north to south," Delgrosso said. "So if you can get here, we'll make sure we can get you back out OK but it's getting here that's been the problem and a frustration not just for us but for our customers as well."

Public works officials said they didn't get much notice from NYSEG about the closure. However, a NYSEG spokesperson told 18 News that this project has been planned for months and that they only requested a single lane closure to complete the project.
