Calls for Safe Act Recertification Deadline Extension

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - New York State leaders are calling on the governor to extend the Safe Act deadline for renewing pistol permits that are over five years old.

The deadline is currently set for Jan. 31. Poor outreach and confusion over the legislation are being blamed for the low compliance rate. A state police spokesman said the law required one year's notice to permit holders, over 370,000 letters were sent in Jan. 2017.

Permits can be renewed through the state police website or with a paper form available on the website or at state police stations and some county clerks' offices.

Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss took to Facebook this weekend to remind people about the deadline. He also advised gun owners to contact their local representative about delaying the deadline. He said "No law abiding citizen should lose their right to possess a pistol because they didn't received a recertification notice, or don't understand the process."
