Check scam going around Corning area

CORNING, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - A check scam is going around the Corning area and the Corning Police Department says it's common.

This phony check was sent to a resident who says he was pestered through all hours of the day and night.

Typically, police say, in order to get the victim to cash the check, the scammer will make a promise of money by telling the victim to keep a portion for their "troubles."

Lieutenant Jeffrey Heverly says the department receives a couple of complaints a month and that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

"Always be aware," Lt. Heverly said. "If you're trying to sell something, or if someone asks for you help unsolicited, or they reach out to you and offer you something, it's probably fraudulent."

Lt. Heverly says to use your own judgment and common sense in these cases.

If you do receive one of these in the mail, report it to your local police department.
