City of Hornell mayor stepping down after decades of public service

HORNELL, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The Mayor of Hornell gave his farewell bang of the gavel for the people of his city.

It would be the last time for Mayor Shawn Hogan, and the last meeting he will preside over. It came to an end after 32 years of overseeing the City of Hornell.

"It's a joyful time, but it's also very sad," Hogan said. "There was so many friends and relatives here, former city employees that kind of made it tough to keep my composure. They were here being supportive."

In an emotion-filled speech, Hogan thanked his constituents, family, friends and colleagues for their support. At times, he was holding back tears. It was a reminder of why he said he enjoys working for local government.

"I like local government because you can see the fruits of your labors," Hogan said. "If you go to Albany, you just become one of the crowd or Washington and lock steps with what the party tells you to do or what this party tells you to do."

He said he can see the fruits of his labor.

"I know I've made a difference," He said. "I wonder if they can say that?"

Some of his accomplishments including industrial development and securing the contract with train-manufacturer, Alstom. By his side, seeing all of it happen, was his wife.

"We had a beautiful life for the past 32 years," She said. "I have no complaints, I'm actually kind of sad too that he's giving it up because it is his life's work."

As the next administration is about to step in, Hogan said the city will be in good hands.

"If everyone works together, for the common good and have a common goal," Hogan said, "things usually work out for the best."

Hogan will still serve Hornell. He will be a consultant with Hornell's Industrial Development Agency.
