Coping With Anxiety After Vegas

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history, many Americans may be feeling more anxious than usual.

"Seeing these violent images, hearing stories where it becomes more personal, it does take a toll on a person's psyche," TV commentator, author and psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig said. "These events are random and so the chances of us being impacted by this is rare, but I understand it's still unsettling."

Though the attack happened in Las Vegas, Dr. Ludwig said many people fear a similar attack could happen in their area.

"People are worried that this could happen in their own hometown, or in a city that they're about to visit," Dr. Ludwig said. "It's just disturbing in general the increase of gun violent crimes that people are seeing."

For parents that have young ones asking about the violent attack, Ludwig said it's best to follow the child's lead.

"So you want to ask them what they heard about the incident, what were people talking about in school?" she said. "Then you want to underscore that there are good people in the world working towards keeping everybody safe."

Dr. Ludwig said it's imperative to find a way to soothe yourself when feeling stressed. Whether that means meditating, exercising, or even meeting up with a friend.

"Move forward in life with purpose, we want to live our life on purpose anyway,"  Ludwig said. "So we shouldn't allow these upsetting events to take us away from soothing ourselves and moving forward with purpose and trying to make a difference in a positive way."
