Corning firefighter to leave department

Arrested on drug charges last fall

CORNING, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - - A lieutenant in the Corning Fire Department is retiring after being arrested on drug charges.

43-year old Thomas Margeson was indicted on charges of selling heroin last September.

Corning served papers to terminate Margeson, but a compromise with the firefighter's union allows him to retire on January 31. He is being demoted from Lieutenant to Firefighter 3rd grade and his salary will be cut by nearly $23,000..

The 19-year veteran will remain on paid leave until his retirement.

He will also forfeit all post-retirement benefits such as cash outs for accrued time and health insurance.

His pension status will be determined by the state.

Margeson still faces criminal charges after being arrested following a ten month investigation into heroin sales.

Margeson was also a deputy chief with the Horseheads Village Fire Department.
