ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Curtis Burrows, the man charged with killing a Big Flats mailman in November, hanged himself yesterday evening in a jail cell, Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss said.
Burrows was found dead at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating.
Before the murder, Burrows met a woman in Corning and attempted to kidnap her. She escaped, but Burrows stole her car. He then crashed her car along the Chemung-Steuben County Line.
Burrows then took off on foot and broke into a home in Big Flats and shot homeowner Timothy Webster. He then fled with Webster's truck before crashing near Mansfield.
He was arrested in the hospital and held in Tioga County before being extradited to New York.
He was facing a first-degree murder charge and 12 other counts.
