Elmira Heights Police Identify Apartment Scam Suspect

- ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y (WETM-18) -- The Elmira Heights Police Department has identified the man who scammed elderly residents at a local senior housing complex.

Video shows the man entering the Villa Serene apartment building, where he solicited money from residents there. He reportedly told residents he was collecting donations for people with cancer.

Elmira Heights Chief of Police, Rich Churches, said the man is identified as Christopher Johnson.

Churches said Johnson works for the Sunshine Subscription Agency in Coral Springs, Florida and is in his early to mid twenties. However, Churches said the group is operating illegally.

"The problem that we're having is number one: they came into a locked facility. They didn't have a peddler's permit and we can't verify where all of these funds are going that they supposedly were taking in. So, we're concerned about obviously all of those things,” said Churches.

Churches fears the residents in the apartment, who are low income, were taken advantage of.

He said Johnson is traveling in a white van with Florida plates.

The investigation is ongoing and there could be pending charges.
