ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Police have identified Joyce A. Allen as the woman who died in Friday's house fire in Elmira's Southside.
Firefighters say Allen, 77, was found inside the residence in the 300 block of Baty Street. Family members on scene were notified.
The call came in around 9:15pm on the 300 block of Baty Street for a structure fire with possible entrapment.
The first officers on scene spoke with a witness who advised a resident was likely inside. Occupants of the adjoining apartment were evacuated.
Multiple agencies responded immediately but by the time first responders gained entry to the second level of the home, it was too late.
"[We] very quickly got into the residence, the whole upstairs was consumed in smoke and they did the best they could but unfortunately the person was already deceased," said Sergeant William Solt with the Elmira Police Department.
The fire was contained and controlled in a short period of time.
The residence is a duplex -- and displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.
A cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
