The fire that started as early as six p.m. at the automotive recycling yard was quickly met with a team of firefighters and the partial closure of county route 64.
Deputy Charles Morrision says the police departments wanted to help in any way they could to speed up the process.
"We were dispatched to assist the Town and Country and Village of Horseheads Fire Department on several working car fires at Horseheads Pick A Part. Upon arrival we were asked to shut down County Route 64 so they could obtain a water source from a fire hydrant."
The multi-car fire was successfully extinguished after three hours of work.
Many shoppers in the neighboring Southern Tiers Shopping Complex detoured their trips to avoid the scene. One shopper was Randy Prutsman whose trip was interrupted by the flames.
"I was headed towards the mall area on 64 and decided to go the other direction so it did detour me a little bit, yeah it was kind of weird to see black smoke coming out of the air, but yeah it was pretty alarming."
County Route 64 is now completely clear and open to traffic.
The Fire Department tells us no one was injured and there was virtually no property damage to the business structures.
Town and Country Fire Chief Don Fischer confirmed that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The vehicles that caught fire did not have any power, but further investigations will continue tomorrow to determine the cause.
