Going down memory lane with Carole King, an artist that redefined a generation

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Her songs, you might remember. Her songs redefined the 60s and the 70s.

Her name is Carole King. Her story is one of humble beginnings to successful songwriter.

"She is such an incredible woman," Sarah Bockel, the lead actor who plays Carole King, said. "She's such an icon in our pop culture."

The musical, Beautiful- The Carole King Musical pays homage to the 76-year-old singer and song writer.

"It's definitely a big production," Traci Lee, a dancer in plays an Uptown Singer and one of the Shirelles, said. "We get to really give the feeling the audience has when they first hear Carole hit those first chords."

The musical takes you through time. The actors portray each character, showing what they went through, the songs king wrote and how everything around her influenced her life.

"It's just a lot of imagining yourself in her circumstances so that you can personally connect to her struggles and the personal challenges she faced in her life," Bockel said.

King faced euphoria, success and even heartbreak.

Some of the songs in the musical were written by Carole King. You may not have known, but once you hear them, you might recognize them. So just which songs are some of the characters' favorites?

"It's Too Late is my favorite one, even if though it is a sad one," Bockel said. "I love singing You've Got a Friend, basically all the Tapestry songs I really love."

"So I loved learning that she wrote the Locomotion, I did not know that," Lee said. "I love, love, love Will You Still Love Me.It's such a moment the audience has with Carole when she plays the first chords."

The actors say they owe their success to King and her success.

"Thank you for changing my life," Bockel said, when asked what she would tell King. "She has completely changed my life and all of our lives for the better."
