NICHOLS, (18 NEWS) - - The American rock band Grand Funk Railroad is coming to Tioga Downs during a special concert to benefit area veterans on Saturday.
The band has been performing for more than 45 years and describes itself as projecting a hard driving sound with soulful vocals.
Drummer and Co-lead singer Don Brewer said they have always been involved in efforts to help people.
""We did a series of concerts back in the '90's that benefited Bosnia war orphans, back when there was all the trouble in Europe and Serbia," Brewer said. "Families were being torn apart, kids were being put on the street, so we raised a lot of money for that."
The band still does about 35-40 shows a year and Brewer said it is nice getting to go home every week and that it is a terrific way to tour.
Grand Funk Railroad has played several times in upstate New York, including the State Fair a couple of years ago. Brewer said they look forward to coming back to upstate.
"It's terrific to see the audiences up there and we're looking forward to it," Brewer said. "When the promoter put these two shows together, it was an opportunity for us to come up there and spend a little more time in a beautiful part of the country in a beautiful time of the year."
Tickets are $15 and are now on sale at Ticketmaster locations and at the Tioga Downs Casino gift shop. All proceeds will go to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group, which connects area veterans, service members, and their families with a wide variety of resources to assist with their physical, emotional, and economic well-being.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. and is followed by fireworks display.
Grand Funk Railroad is known for hits like "We're an American Band," "Walk Like a Man," and "Loco-Motion."
