Hula Hooping: Summer fitness class burns calories in Hammondsport

HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - If you loved hula-hooping as a child, then you can turn old-school fun into fitness at Heron Hill Winery in Hammondsport.

Hula hooping is a fun way to stay fit. The exercise helps with balance, coordination, movement and play says Jackie Nixon, instructor at Heron Hill Winery and Hoops By Hulacat

Nixon has been hula hooping for 15 years and has been teaching classes, workshops and performing for over 5 years.  She structures her classes so that every student will have successes and breakthroughs.

Hooping is a low impact workout that can burn up to 400 calories per hour.

"I've only been doing it 3 weeks and I've already lost more weight and I can feel my abdomen tightening up and smoothing out so I think it's like really great for exercise and weight loss," said student Carolyn Difiori-Hopkins.

Classes are all levels and beginners are welcome.

"My favorite thing about hooping is it makes you smile, you could be having a bad day, you could start hula hooping and even if you're having a bad time by the end of it, you're smiling and you exercise which makes you feel even better," said Nixon.

Nixon has a large selection of hoop sizes available to use so you are guaranteed to find a right fit.  Hoops are available for purchase.

A single class is $15 for one-hour of instruction including a complimentary glass of wine after class.

Yoga and hooping classes alternate every Wednesday in August starting at 5:30 p.m. outdoors on the lawn. Rain or shine.  Here is the full class schedule:

August 2 - Unwind and Wine Yoga with Dakota

August 9 - Hooping Happy Hour with Jackie
