Hundreds Gathered to Seneca Lake to Watch Cardboard Boats

- WATKINS GLEN, N.Y (WETM-18)- The cloudy dreary weather didn't stop hundreds of people from gathering at the Seneca Harbor Park.

Hundreds gathered for one reason—cardboard. Friends spent the past few weeks building, hot gluing, and painting cardboard boats.

Claudio Ridallo said, “All of us are great friends, we put lots of work put into this thing, we race to show people, have a good time all together that is what it’s all about.”

This was this group first time at the Watkins Glen Cardboard Regatta. It didn't take them long to make their boats when they are not playing pirates this groups of guys are engineers.

“We are good. We don't like to waste time, we work with efficiency.”

This gang may be confident but just a little further down the isle is the Old Geezers. These guys are the reining champs of Seneca Lake. For a few years Bill Game has been involved with the regatta and he is not worried about the lack of engineers on his team.

Game said, “We are not going to get wet, squirted with hoses and squirt guns maybe, but we are not going in the water.”

But old folks weren't the only ones participating in today’s activities. A group of 7th grade girls raised money to ensure they were able to give to charity.

Abigail said, “We raised most of the money by collecting cans and bottles so we can buy the tape and paint. It helped.”

On average the boats cost about two hundred dollars to build. There were 70 cardboard boats participating in the event. All money raised went for the People’s Choice Benefits The Spirit of Schuyler.
