"I Love New York" signs to be removed

(18 NEWS) - Over five hundred of "I Love New York" signs that span the state's highway systems will be taken down soon. That's after officials in Washington said the state would lose $14 million in federal funding if they weren't removed.

The state has spent $8.1M installing the 514 "I Love New York" signs since 2014.

Federal officials told Governor Cuomo to remove them because they were unsafe, but he refused. In a statement released on Friday state DOT officials called the campaign a success, as it has increased the number of tourists visiting New York state by 18 percent.

State officials also announced Friday that they will install new signs this summer and will consult with the federal government on the designs.
