LED Lights May Soon Replace All of Elmira's Street Lights

- ELMIRA, N.Y (18 NEWS) -- The Elmira City Council wants to continue reducing energy usage in the city.

At Thursday morning's Elmira City Council workshop, the council discussed replacing all of the city's street lights with LED lights.

11% of lights in the city are already LED lights.

The Department of Public Works Acting Director, Brian Beasley, said LED lights are more cost effective and more efficient. He said LED lights result in a 70% reduction in energy.

"It's got a huge impact on our utility costs and our utility bills. We've seen a significant drop since we've changed over to the LED. Plus, the brighter light is better on the street,” said Beasley.

Beasley also said the city is currently standardizing and picking a light that will be best suited to go in public areas.

He adds the lights will be installed throughout the city as soon as bids are complete to cover a $48,000 budget for the lights.
