The Sheriff’s Office says around 8:00 p.m. Thursday, deputies and officers executed a search warrant at 129-131 W. Fourteenth Street in Elmira Heights at a business commonly known as “PBNJ”. About 15 people were found inside the business when the raid occurred.
Police say the location seemed to be a store front, but had an illegal gambling operation in the rear with a sophisticated set-up to help the operation. This set-up included a security system, display monitors showing seating arrangements and winnings to be paid out, and a complete list of past and present clients, their contact information, and who referred them to the operation.
Two men were arrested in the sting. 53 year old Robert Townson of Elmira and 47 year old Jeffrey Durfey of Cayuta were both charged with Promoting Gambling in the 2nd Degree, a misdemeanor. Both will be back in Village of Elmira Heights Court at a later date.
Police also seized around $2,700 in cash and other items to help the gambling ring operate in the raid.
