MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WSYR-TV) - A Florida man has been arrested after allegedly plotting to place explosive devices inside Target stores along the east coast, beginning in the Syracuse area.
Mark Barnett is accused of trying to get a confidential informant to place 10 explosives down the east coast.
According to the criminal complaint, he was planning on starting in Syracuse and working his way down to Florida.
The confidential informant surrendered the 10 explosive devices to law enforcement on Feb. 13 and they were detonated safely.
Barnett had created explosives to be placed on the shelves in Target. The explosives were made in stuffing mix boxes, breakfast bars and pasta boxes.
The motive, according to the complaint, was to make the company’s stock value plunge after the explosions so Barnett could “cheaply acquire shares before an eventual rebound.”
An explosives expert determined that they were capable of causing property damage, serious injury, or death to nearby persons upon detonation.
It is not known at this time what kind of charges Barnett is facing, but according to the complaint, he is a convicted felon, and therefore cannot possess firearms or explosives.
It is unclear which Syracuse-area Target was the intended store for the explosives.
