ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Recently, the national division of Meals on Wheels was showered with online donations after President Trump released his budget proposal.
Included in that budget were funding cuts to dozens of social programs, including one that provides some funding to Meals on Wheels. The national organization reported receiving nearly $100,000 in online donations right after the president's budget was introduced.
But local officials are worried that will deter local donors from taking part in fundraising in Chemung County.
"Anything that comes to us directly stays with us, we do not have to send it anywhere," Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Chemung County Darleen Ike said. "And again we're in the midst of our capital campaign we have our new building and would like to do more to it so the donations are still very much needed here."
Ike said they'll be holding their "Night at the Races" fundraiser this Saturday night at the Holiday Inn in Elmira. She said it's the biggest fundraiser of the year, featuring full buffet, a silent auction, and raffle baskets.
Tickets can be bought at the door for $45 each, or $80 per couple. You can also call Meals on Wheels of Chemung County to purchase tickets over the phone.
