Neighbor saves children from smoke-filled home

SAVONA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - On Tuesday afternoon, it was the swift actions of a neighbor that saved the lives of two children in Savona.

Just before 4 p.m., the Savona Fire Department responded to 59 Main Street, in the Village of Savona, to find a home filled with smoke.

Police say a neighbor rushed into the residence and removed two children from the smoke-filled home. The two-year-old and six-year-old were alone at the time.

The mother, Khristie Dearmitt, 34, returned home to see the fire department suppressing the smoke.

An investigation determined that the cause of the smoke was from food left on an active stove burner.

Dearmitt has been charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She was issued an appearance ticket to Savona Village Court.
