Obstruction of justice charges possible after Elmira Eagles assault

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Elmira Police are asking for help investigating an assault that happened at a Elmira Eagles basketball at the Penna Ave. YMCA on Dec. 16.

Two people ended up with concussions, one with a broken jaw. The victims told police the suspect was wearing jersey #22.

Police said the team's manager, coach and players knowingly misled them by telling officers a man named Chad Dillard started the fight. Police subsequently learned someone else, not Dillard, had been given the #22 jersey and was wearing it on the night of the assault.

"Obstruction charges could apply to the way this investigation is going," Elmira Police Captain Anthony Alvernaz said. "Again we'll probably look at this here in the near future, consult with the district attorneys office to see if that's something that we'll have to do. Hopefully not, I'm kind of hoping that with some of the publicity the hierarchy of the team will eventually say that they want help out."

If you can identify the player wearing number #22, (pictured right)

or have any other information that may help officers in the investigation you're asked to call the Elmira Police Department at 737-5626 or the anonymous tip line at 271-HALT (4258).
