It was a warm welcome home for Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss, his first trip back since his nomination as the Republican pick for Lieutenant Governor on Thursday. “It’s always good to be home,” said Moss. “But [I’m] looking forward to getting back out on the campaign trail.”
Moss and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino held a rally on the steps of the Chemung County Courthouse, looking to get their message out to the voters of the Southern Tier.
“We both have the exact same reason why we're running,” said Astorino, who is also the Westchester County Executive. “Quite frankly, maybe it's a little selfish, he's got his eight year old son, I have my three kids, and if we're ever going to have an opportunity for them to live in this state, we've got to make a change in course right now.”
For some supporters, one issue dominated their focus at the rally. “We’re looking to end the SAFE Act, get it repealed, and secure our 2nd Amendment rights under the Constitution,” said Michael Kintner of Waverly.
“And let’s not even talk about the SAFE Act,” said Moss during his speech. “I’m like, wow, we have a chance to repeal the SAFE Act.”
But there were protestors at the rally as well, mostly against Astorino’s stance on fracking. “I’ve always been proud of the fact that we have well water that is absolutely pristine and I really don't want to put my health, the health of my family, my grandchildren that are here with me today, at risk,” said Linda Finch of Sullivanville.
“I am moving forward if I become Governor with creating the jobs that we need with the right regulations for this state, safeguarding the water supply,” said Astorino, who said he had conversations with some of the protestors after the rally. “30 states are doing it.”
All issues that will be hashed out at length over the more than five months until Election Day.
Governor Andrew Cuomo still has not named his replacement for Lieutenant Governor Bob Duffy, who said two weeks ago that he will not run for re-election in November. The New York State Democratic Convention will be held next week on Long Island.
