Sheriff wants Deputies to be certified EMTs

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard says he wants all his Deputies to be certified Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs, within the next two years.

Sheriff Allard says that's because his deputies are often the first on scene in emergencies, especially in rural areas.

Allard says he also thinks the training could help make up for a lack of volunteer EMTs in Steuben County. Deputies already receive annual training for resuscitation as well as administering narcan.

Allard says the training is expected to take three to six months.
