Staying Safe When Walkways Turn Icy

SAYRE, P.A. (18 NEWS) - With the recent snowfall through the Twin Tiers and more on the way many sidewalks can become slippery and that can cause a big concern for pedestrians trying to walk around. Doctors say after a winter weather event if people don't treat their sidewalks it can cause a very dangerous situation. Slippery walkways can easily lead to more dangerous injuries than to just your hand, wrists or arms.

"Head injuries," Says Doctor Daniel Tayag, Orthopedic Sergeon at Robert Packer Hospital. "For when we have a situation where the ground is slippery and wet you have to protect your head too so the tuck and roll might be a good idea." The best tip of advice is to tuck and roll if you are falling to try and prevent any injury.

There are some simple preventative steps you can take to stay safe if you need to venture out when the weather turns icy one of the easiest ways to prevent slipping is wearing the appropriate shoes. "Footwear that has good traction," Said Tayag. "And if you don't have that then using those devices that you can attach to your shoes that can improve traction that will really help."

Other simple steps include making sure where you are walking is well lit so you can spot black ice. It can be as simple as shoveling or adding salt to your walkway to melt away any ice that may have formed. One of the biggest threats comes after a long cold night after any thawing from the previous day has turned to ice, you want to be sure to salt that before heading out.

But what if you've already fallen? When should you seek medical help? According to Doctor Tayag if you have fallen and have a very deformed extremity then you need to get into the emergency room. However, if there is swelling and only minor pain then you can wait to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.
