Testimony begins in Patrick's Pub shooting trial

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Opening statements were heard by the jury in the Patrick's Pub shooting trial on Tuesday.

Zecary Banks, 28, is charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Loaded Firearm, as well as several Assault charges in the shooting that happened at Patrick's on College Avenue in the early morning hours of July 28th of 2016.

Chemung County District Attorney Weeden Wetmore began by describing the scene and where each victim was located within the bar. He described the injuries each victim sustained in the shooting. He finished his opening statement by saying that this shooting is "something that should never happen in Elmira."

Defense Attorney Jack Kotchick emphasized how chaotic the scene was at the bar that night. He also asked jurors to really consider whether or not Banks was correctly identified as the shooter, or if he was just another patron at the bar that night.

Cody Whitmer, one of the people shot in the bar, testified Tuesday.

The jury will hear more testimony when court resumes at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
