Tommy Hilfiger comes home, supports local charity

CORNING, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - World renowned fashion designer and Elmira native, Tommy Hilfiger was back in the Southern Tier Tuesday.

He was here for a fundraiser visiting the Tommy Hilfiger store in Corning for a book signing.  Fans lined up out the door and stretched out the block at the Market Street store.

For a $20 donation, customers got to meet the designer and get a signed copy of his memoir, "American Dreamer: My Life in Fashion & Business."

All proceeds will go to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Hilfiger grew up in Elmira, and still has many friends and family in the area.  Hilfiger's younger sister Betsy Hilfiger was at the book signing.

The book, which was released in November 2016, is described as being honest, candid and sincere and reveals never-before-told stories from both his personal and professional life, and the triumphs and setbacks in building a global fashion lifestyle brand.

Hilfiger tells 18 News: "If someone is starting out in business or if someone wants to create their own brand, there's a lot of information on how to do it. There's a lot of background on my family and my upbringing and how I think and how I've built a team to really build this global brand so I think there's a lot of interesting info in the book."

In the beginning of the book, Hilfiger writes about growing up in Elmira, where his dreams began.

As for the proceeds raised, a spokesperson from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier tells 18 News they're not releasing numbers just yet because several people were donating additional money during the event.

The Hollywood Reporter reports the designer is heading to Italy in February 2018 to present the "Tommy-Now" show on February 25 during Milan Fashion Week.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hilfiger has yet to announce the location, but if it's anything like his previous shows in New York, Los Angeles and London, it's sure to be spectacular!
