Doctors are optimistic about recovery of NYS Trooper involved in I-86 crash

Doctors are optimistic about his recovery, but expect that it will be "prolonge

CAMPBELL, N.Y. (18 NEWS/WROC) - The trooper involved in a serious accident on I-86 Wednesday evening underwent surgery, and is recovering Friday at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

According to a release from the New York State Police, Trooper Craig Foglia remains in critical condition. Doctor's are optimistic about his recovery, but expect that it will be "prolonged".

During a press conference held at the Hospital at 1 p.m., Police also said that alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the crash, and they are continuing to investigate what caused Kenneth Aukett to veer off of the roadway and slam into the Trooper's car.

"The hospital staff here, the doctors have been tremendous," Maj. Rick Allen of the NYSP said. "They were on standby waiting for the helicopter when it landed. They've done everything they can to give him a fighting chance."

"He has life threatening injuries, he's currently in critical condition and did undergo surgery last night," chief surgeon Dr. Mark Gestring said. "But he is improving today and we are optimistic and continue to hope he does well."

Trooper Foglia is a 13-year veteran of the New York State Police.
