UPDATE: "Devastating" Fire in Ovid Tuesday Night

- OVID, N.Y. (WETM-18) - Several Schuyler County fire departments helped to battle a large fire that severely damaged two restaurants, the town assessment office and a community thrift shop in Ovid, Seneca County Tuesday night.

A fire this large in a town this small had people in Ovid calling it a tragedy.

The fire started on Main Street in Ovid, which is State Route 414 north of Watkins Glen. Local firefighters there were joined by Schuyler County departments from Burdett, Hector, Odessa, Montour and Mecklenburg—plus firefighters from other surrounding areas.

As of Tuesday night, there was no word yet on whether anyone was inside the buildings at the time—or if anyone was injured.
The town attorney tells us flames and smoke could be seen coming from the second floor of the New Dragon Chinese restaurant.

Cars were left stranded, unable to drive out from the village because fire trucks blocked the roads. That includes the town attorney, whose office is across the street.

“As the evening went on, you could see it get worse,” said Town Attorney Steve Getman. “It appeared that it started behind the restaurant and then you could see smoke filling up the restaurant and the assessor’s office and the other restaurant.”

“I just hope no one was hurt,” continued Getman. “This is a terrible tragedy for the people of Ovid. The fire department responded swiftly, however. We owe them all a debt of gratitude for everything they've done.”

“We just have to pray that everybody made it out okay,” said Lisa Brewer of Ovid as she watched firefighters put out the fire.
