Watkins Glen Revitalization Plans

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Watkins Glen had been awarded a 10-million dollar state grant announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo on August 3rd of this year, but where is that money going?

Judy McKinney Cherry, executive director of Schuyler County Partnership for Economic Development or SCOPED, says the focus of this grant will be spent in the area between Franklin and Decatur streets down to Fourth street and over to Clute Park.

Many people are excited to see what will be coming in the next couple of months and McKinney Cherry is hoping for complete transparency with the residents of Watkins Glen. That is why tonight is the first of three public workshops where residents can express their ideas and opinions of what they hope will come from the grant.

Many like Carla Collichio and her husband who come to Watkins Glen frequently to view the scenery say they hope that the grant goes where it's needed most. "I see that the funding is going toward the development of the park and that's wonderful too, we just took a walk down main street and it seems like the businesses are thriving." Collichio said.

Representatives need to draw up a proposal and send it to the Governors office for approval before any revitalization begins. The state needs to approve that the plans that have been drawn up will benefit the village as a whole. The hope is that these projects will go far beyond just benefiting people now. "How do we transform our community and how do we get it ready for the next generations that come along behind us." McKinney Cherry said.

According to McKinney Cherry all the pieces are there to revitalize the village of Watkins Glen, and the 10-million dollar grant will put them right over the top.
