Winter Storm 2018: The Latest Developments

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - UPDATE: As of 5:00 p.m., major roadways are clear around the Southern Tier are clear. However narrow and residential roads still have snow. The region is still under a Winter Driving Advisory and Departments of Public Works are advising people to not drive on the streets unless it's an emergency.

Be not being on the roads, the Elmira DPW said it will make snow plowing operations, such as clearing snow and salting the road, easier. Dump trucks and pick-up trucks with plows are now going through city streets.

 

 

We are following a developing weather situation, a winter storm began to hit he Twin Tiers around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Many of our local schools, businesses and organizations had already closed in anticipation of the storm.

"Steady snow is expected during the early morning hours," 18 Storm Team Meteorologist Stevie Daniels said. "Snow showers become heavy mid-morning and into the afternoon with 6-8 inches of snow accumulation possible for the Twin Tiers. Heavy snow continues around dinner time and then will start tapering off overnight with temperatures dropping down to mid teens. Light snow is possible for the early morning hours Thursday and staying below average."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to prepare for heavy snow on Wednesday.

At the Governor's direction, the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, State Police, the Department of Transportation and the Thruway Authority have already begun to plan accordingly for weather conditions.

"New Yorkers across the state should be prepared in advance for heavy snow that is currently forecast to hit parts of upstate the hardest," Gov. Cuomo said. "We are taking action, readying equipment and will be deploying resources in advance of the storm to ensure we are keeping roads open and our citizens safe. I ask all New Yorkers to stay informed, monitor your local weather forecast and if you must be on the road, give yourself extra time."
