Women's conference shows women power of positive thoughts, improve body image

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - A study by Dove found that only 24 percent of American women feel confident about their bodies.

Body image was just one of many topics discussed in a local conference on Thursday.

The conference, called Own It! is meant to empower and inspire women.

They gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn in Horseheads to talk gender bias and workplace issues and how to overcome them.

They also learned the power of positive thoughts and meditation.

The keynote speaker was Bonnie Mann, a local woman and former two-time world champion boxer inducted into the Marine Corp Boxing Hall of Fame earlier this year in April.

"A lot of the social issues that many people face in their lifetime, I've experienced for myself," Mann, who is also the health and wellness director at the Corning YMCA, said. "With an empowerment conference like this, it's nice to be able to share my personal story so that people around can have someone to connect to and feel that connection so that they can maybe go out and deal with some things on their own."

Her speech touched base on her life's story of abuse, addiction, and identity. Other topics the conference discussed were politics and activism.

It was held by the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce.
