You might be tipping off thieves with your cardboard boxes

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - You might not have to worry about porch pirates until next holiday season or the next time you order a package, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're off the hook.

Christmas is over and you might be drowning in cardboard boxes and wrapping paper, but recycling them in front of your house could still tip off thieves.

Gift-wrapping paper in your garbage or cardboard boxes in your recycling bin can turn the light switch on for burglars, cluing them into what new, shiny devices are now in your home.

Leaving these items in front of your home can advertise to potential thieves, not even giving you 24 hours to enjoy your new gift, so what are some things you can do to prevent this?

For starters, cut up the cardboard into smaller pieces so that whatever was previously inside cannot be identifiable on the box.

You can also check with your local police department. Some stations accept recycling this time of year for this reason.

Lastly, wait until trash day and put it out last minute if you know what time exactly your truck arrives every week.

If you're still in the giving mood this holiday season, you can also utilize givebackbox.com. Fill up any boxes with clothes or shoes you no longer want then go to the website to print a free shipping label. The company will send your belongings to charities in need in the same box you reused.

The items are directly routed to the closest participating charity organization.

If you don't utilize this option, you can also fold your boxes inside-out to hide the labels.
