The Buffalo News says 194 cases were filed in Corning City Court in 2011 and nine in 2012 by “The Law Office of Thomas W. Reed II, PLLC”. The Rules of the House of Representatives state that Congresspeople cannot “permit the name of such individual to be used by such a firm, partnership, association, corporation, or other entity.”
Congressman Reed’s campaign responded by e-mail statement, with Campaign Spokeswoman Katherine Pudwill saying Sunday, “Tom hasn't practiced law since he took office and in fact never renewed his law license. The law firm in question is no longer operating and outside counsel was brought in from day one to work in conjunction with the Ethics committee. Tom has been transparent with the Committee to ensure the firms assets would be dissolved in accordance with ethical guidelines - a process which is nearly complete.”
Reed’s opponent, Tompkins County Legislator Martha Robertson, also responded through Campaign Manager Jordanna Zeigler saying, “It is disappointing to learn of yet another questionable situation involving Congressman Reed in what appears to be a growing pattern. First, Tom Reed did not pay his taxes on time 39 times, now we find out he may have operated his law firm under his own name as a sitting Congressman in possible violation of House Ethics rules. Voters of the Southern Tier deserve a member of Congress who serves them, not one who serves himself."
