BIG FLATS, N.Y. (PRESS RELEASE) - The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care and the Steuben County Office for the Aging announced this week they will once again be participating in the NYS Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. Eligible seniors will receive a $20 coupon booklet. The coupons can only be used at approved Farmers’ Market Vendors in New York State. They may not be used in grocery stores, road side stands or small markets. Vendors must have a blue SFMNP poster being displayed. Booklets are limited to one per household, one per season.

The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is a nutrition program that targets low-income seniors. The program is designed to increase the accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables among low-income populations. The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs inject an estimated $40 million into farmers' markets annually, and have been instrumental in subsidizing the creation and operation of numerous new farmers' markets in underserved communities in New York State. This also helps to provide a great opportunity for small farmers to have an easily accessible avenue to market their produce and provide them with additional revenue.

The coupons can only be used for fresh produce, and cannot be used for plants, jellies, lunch items, or anything else at the market. No change will be given back from the coupons, but generally, the vendors are very friendly, and will assist the senior in utilizing the coupons to the maximum benefit.
Booklets will only be distributed to County residents at 60 years of age or older who also meet the following requirements:

1- Monthly income must be at or below these amounts:
1 person household: $1,799/month
2 person household: $2,425/month
3 person household: $3,051/month
2- OR currently receiving or eligible to receive at least one of the following: SSI, public assistance, or Section 8 housing subsidy.
The booklets will only be distributed directly to the eligible senior at the distribution site, but others can shop for the senior at the markets. Standards for eligibility and participation in the SFMNP are the same for everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex.
