Finn Academy Charter School Approved

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM-18) The proposed Finn Academy in Elmira has been approved by the State University of New York Board of Trustees Charter School Committee.
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM-18) The proposed Finn Academy in Elmira has been approved.

The SUNY Board of Trustees Charter School Committee approved seven charter schools this morning, and Finn Academy is on the list.  Finn Academy is one of seven approved charter schools, but the only one in Upstate New York.  The other newly approved charter schools are in New York City, and one in Brooklyn.

Finn Academy Charter School in Elmira plans to serve grades kindergarten through third grade, for a total of 180 students. The school plans to grow one grade per year; by the end of its fifth year, the school will serve a total of 396 students from kindergarten through seventh grade.

Finn Academy is set to include college awareness programs, an extended school day and year and a student advisory program.

There are two potential facilities for the academy including an Elmira district building that is no longer in use and a former building in downtown Elmira. The school is set to open in August 2015.

The Founding Board for Finn Academy Charter School will hold a news conference Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Chemung Valley History Museum, along with its community partner Friends of the Chemung River Watershed.
