ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM-TV) A historic downtown Elmira building that is disrepair is now undergoing exterior work.

The vacant building located at 124 to 126 Lake Street was deemed to be a safety hazard.

According to the Elmira City Code Department the owner of the property, Rivas Enterprises, located down state in Monroe, New York is facing criminal code violations. One count of not maintaining exterior walls and one count of not having windows in sound condition and good repair.

"It is under repair for exterior renovation of the facade," said Rocco Picarazzi of Elmira Code Enforcement. "That includes powerwashing and new windows. All exterior work. I don't know what is going to happen inside yet. When they get the plan together, they can move forward with the inside. For now it's all exterior. But the building itself has been dilapidated for years."

According to the City Law Department, the city and owners will be in court Thursday to discuss the charges.
