Robertson Hits Rep. Reed Over Budget Vote

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM-18) – Martha Robertson, the Democratic challenger in the 23rd Congressional District, held an event in Elmira in response to the Paul Ryan budget passed in the House of Representatives Thursday.

The budget bill passed on a party line vote. The Republican spending plan promises a balanced budget in 10 years through deep and widespread cuts, tax reform, and the elimination of the health care coverage offered under the Affordable Care Act.

Robertson says that the plan includes a 36% tax cut for those making a million dollars or more, and a 29% tax cut for the wealthiest companies. “Who pays for that?” asked Robertson. “Middle class families, on average, will pay $2,000 more in taxes in order to pay for the tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations. I think that’s just wrong.”

Congressman Tom Reed’s campaign responded Thursday. "Tom Reed cares about the financial wellbeing of families in our community," said Katherine Pudwill, Communications Director for Tom Reed for Congress. "It's no secret that our country spends more than we take in, and a vote to grow our economy, balance the budget, and address growing concerns over entitlement programs is a step in the right direction. Martha Robertson supports a budget that raises taxes by $1.5 trillion, and increases spending by nearly $2.5 trillion. Add to that her support of a slash in Medicare, unfair and devastating to seniors, of over $700 billion to fund Obamacare, and Robertson still won't recognize the financial burden she is willing to place on hardworking families. None of this should be a surprise since she has doubled property tax collections on Tompkins County residents and increased spending there by almost 60%."
