ELMRIA, N.Y. (WETM-18) – Following a rash of deadly fires in the Elmira area, the American Red Cross is launching a program aimed at preventing them.

The Red Cross held the Team Fire Stopper event at the New Beginnings Methodist Church on East Miller Street in Elmira Saturday. The purpose of the event was simple: help families know what could be a danger to start a fire in their own home, and how to keep themselves safe should a fire start.

“Elmira has had enough fires recently to have it qualify for this specific event,” said Program Coordinator Anne Rich. “To my knowledge, there were four fatal fires within the recent year that's gone by, so it's important that people know how to protect themselves.”

The event also handed out free 10 year smoke detectors to families, helped them plan home exit drills, and gave hands-only CPR demonstrations. The Red Cross says it will be hosting other Team Fire Stopper events around the area in the future.
