CORNING, N.Y. (WETM-18) – One person is dead following four separate crashes on Interstate 86 in Painted Post Tuesday morning.

New York State Police say the crashes happened during a rain storm that went through just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. A box truck ended up on its side in the westbound lane of I-86 between Exits 46 and 44. A car rear-ended another that was trying to slow down for the box truck. Following that, a group of cars and tractor trailers collided trying to avoid the rear-end crash.

Police say the final group of crashes is where the person was killed.

The Steuben County Coroner’s Office confirmed that one person died in the crashes. At this time, we have not been told the exact number of vehicles involved in the crashes, or how many people were in those vehicles, except that multiple cars and tractor trailers were involved.

State Police are still investigating the crashes, and performed an accident reconstruction Tuesday afternoon. The westbound lane of I-86 was closed for hours after the crashes, but police say it is expected to reopen Tuesday evening.
