27-year-old Danielle Hedden of Toms River New Jersey was charged with prostitution and with being a fugitive from justice. Police also arrested 24-year-old Raquan Washington of Endicott. Washington was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Knights Inn General Manager Suresh Shah confirmed to us that the arrests took place at his motel yesterday.
Robert Slover the front desk clerk at the Knights Inn says it is routine for the police to perform sting operations in hotel rooms. Right before yesterday’s arrest, he recalls giving joint rooms to police officers.
“The only thing I can tell you is the police came in asked for a couple of rooms and they've done this - and I gave it to them. I gave them a couple of rooms.”
Members of the community have mixed feelings about the issue, but many agree that they aren’t surprised.
Horseheads resident David Vanimburg believes there is a pattern in this behavior.
“It seems like every summer that this particular incident takes places and I think it's been an issue and I think they hide out from different motel to different motel kind of figuring they're eluding the police.”
Elmira resident Roland Coleman says he isn’t surprised by the recent activity.
“This is nothing new to Elmira. Ok, for years and years and years they had that there. So uh, what can you do?”
Joanne Varner of Ithaca doesn’t find the arrest surprising either.
“It’s just it's sad but not surprising, you know it's something you'd expect on city streets but not in the country. But, it's human nature and with our sex obsessed society it's not surprising.
Both Hedden and Washington were arraigned in Village court and sent to Chemung County jail. They are expected to appear in court later tonight.
