Mayor Dan Mandell graduated Southside High School in the class of 1980 before moving on to Corning Community College to earn his AS degree in 1982. Mayor Mandell spent six years in the United States Air Force (3 active and 3 reserve). For 26 years, he worked in the Chemung County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division, 14 of which were spent in the Administration. In May 2014, he retired as a Captain. Mayor Mandell is certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as General Topics Instructor and Suicide Prevention Instructor; he's also a Certified American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Instructor. Currently, Mayor Mandell is working part-time at the Chemung County Sheriff's office as the Accreditation Manager. He is a member of the Age Friendly Coalition, serves on the Chemung County Age Advisory Council, and is currently serving as Mayor of the City of Elmira.
