Michael Garay joined WETM 18 News in September 2018 as a general assignment reporter and weekend web/newscast producer, before becoming a Digital Reporter in January 2019, a role that intertwines both content creation specifically for online and emerging platforms and unique storytelling.
Prior to Elmira, Michael was a News Assistant at NY1 Spectrum News in New York City. During which time, Michael shot b-roll, conducted interviews, and collected sound bites in the field. He also assisted reporters and truck operators during live shots, inspected equipment and trained interns.
Michael graduated Cum Laude from Saint Francis College with a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media: Film, Broadcasting and Journalism and Brooklyn College with a M.F.A. degree in Television Production. While in college, he worked as a sideline reporter for the Terrier Sports Network covering St. Francis athletics, wrote for SFCToday, the student newspaper, and was a member of the College’s Honors Program. In graduate school, he was the director, producer, and cinematographer for a live day-long symposium and completed his thesis film, Rebound, a documentary on St. Francis men’s basketball.
In his free time he enjoys new adventures and the outdoors: hiking and biking.
